Can I get your number? — them

No, but you can toiyp me.

Give people [email protected] instead of your phone number. They write you a proper letter, it arrives in its own time, and your number stays yours until they’ve shown they’re genuine.

How it works

A handle that protects you.

A phone number opens every door at once, forever. A toiyp handle opens one: a letterbox where things move slowly and you decide who gets further.

1

Get your toiyp

Pick a name and you’ve got an address: [email protected]. Easy to say over loud music, and it gives nothing away.

2

Hand it out

When someone asks for your number, give them your handle. They can write in the app, or simply email the address. Either way it lands as a letter.

3

Letters take their time

Every letter is held before delivery, from twenty minutes to a day. No instant replies and no pressure to answer on the spot.

4

Share more when it’s earned

Contact details and photos only unlock once the two of you have built trust, letter by letter. Even then, sharing is your call.

Made for

  • Old friends you’ve just found again
  • Family who live far away
  • Someone you met in person and want to know slowly
  • Anyone who’d rather write properly than fire off a text

Not made for

  • Meeting strangers online. There’s no matching or discovery
  • Quick-fire chat, group threads or “u up?”
  • Being sold to
  • Keeping score of who replied fastest
Inside the app

Feels like messaging. Moves like mail.

Everything you’d expect from a modern app on your phone, minus the parts that make you anxious.

See what’s in the post

When a letter’s on its way to you, you’ll see a short preview and when it arrives. Never the whole thing early.

Your people up top

The friends you write to most sit in a row at the top, so the letters that matter are never buried.

On your home screen

toiyp runs in the browser and installs like an app on iPhone and Android. Drafts are saved on your device, even offline.

For people you’ve actually met

Slow is how you find out who’s sincere.

The friend you bumped into at the station. The cousin who moved abroad. The person you met last night and want to know better, but not quite enough to hand over your number.

toiyp isn’t a place to meet strangers, and it isn’t another chat app. People who mean it will write you a proper letter. People who don’t usually won’t bother.

When you’d toiyp someone

When a number is too much, too soon.

Real connections start in person. toiyp is what you give them afterwards.

You bump into someone from school.

A five-minute hello on a busy pavement and a promise to catch up. Swap numbers and it’s a flurry of texts that fizzles by Friday. Swap handles and a week later you get the whole story.

Fifteen years deserves more than a text.

You meet someone charming at a club.

It’s loud and late, and you can’t tell if they’re sincere or collecting numbers. Players rarely sit down and write a thoughtful letter. Someone genuinely interested will.

A sincerity filter. Slow dating, on your terms.

Your gran lives on another continent.

Time zones wreck video calls and the family group chat moves too fast to say anything that matters. A letter can be written in a quiet moment and read twice.

Distance, made a little shorter.

Also handy: Someone pitched you at a conference and wants to “stay in touch”? Your handle keeps your number out of their CRM. If they’re worth hearing from, they’ll write.

Measured, by design

Guardrails that keep it sincere.

Most messaging apps are built to keep you tapping. toiyp is built so you can put it down, and so whoever’s writing to you has to slow down too.

Your number stays yours

Having your handle doesn’t get anyone your contact details. Those unlock only after real letters have gone back and forth.

Every letter is held

At least twenty minutes, at most a day. The wait keeps things calm and gives both of you room to think.

Second thoughts allowed

Once sealed, a letter is in the post. Until it arrives you can still revise it or stop it altogether.

A mirror before it sends

toiyp can reflect your letter’s tone back to you, warm, neutral or tense, so you see it once before they do.

A nudge, not a flood

If a letter arrived and silence followed, you can add a short P.S. Not a new message and no notification.

Nothing lingers behind

Drafts stay on your device until you seal them. Letters aren’t cached by the app, and signing out wipes what’s stored locally.

FAQ

Fair questions.

Anything else? Write to [email protected].

Is [email protected] a real email address?

Yes, for receiving. Anyone can email it and their message arrives in toiyp as a letter. When you reply, they’re invited to join to read it, so the conversation moves into the app where the guardrails apply. Your personal email stays private.

How long does a letter take to arrive?

Somewhere between twenty minutes and a day. That’s deliberate: it takes the urgency out and makes each letter worth opening. There’s no way to skip the wait.

When does someone get my phone number?

Only when you decide to give it to them. toiyp keeps contact details locked until the two of you have built trust through letters back and forth, and even then sharing is up to you.

How is this different from pen-pal apps?

Pen-pal apps match you with strangers. toiyp has no discovery feed and no matching. It’s for people you’ve met in real life: old friends, family, new acquaintances.

Will they know when I’ve read their letter?

Not in the moment. There are no read ticks or typing indicators. Letters are answered when you’re ready, not when an app says someone is waiting.

So… who’s your toiyp?

Someone’s going to ask for your number. Have a better answer ready.
